About Greg

My name is Greg Farris. I enjoy spending time outdoors in

activities which include mountain climbing, hiking, backpacking,

and snowshoeing. All the while, I have been documenting my

experiences through photographs.

My interest in photography began in high school. My love for outdoor

adventure and nature photography began in college. Over the last

30 years, I have visited 49 states (I have not been to Alaska),

eight countries, and three continents.

I am currently working on a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at Seattle Pacific University (SPU). At SPU I teach outdoor activity and health and wellness undergraduate classes in the Health and Human Performance Department and graduate health and wellness classes in the School of Education. I am Outreach Instructor at the REI Clackamas, OR store. I am also a challenge course facilitator at Camp Tilikum.

My outdoor accomplishments include summiting 32 mountains over 14,000 feet in Colorado, standing on the geographical highpoint of 37 states, and visiting 31 National Parks and more than 45 National Monuments and National Historic Places.

While teaching at the university level and through professional organizations, I have led outdoor adventure trips for 30 years.

There are several photographers and painters who have influenced my photography style.

The photographers include :

  • Ansel Adams for his majestic landscapes and his work with light and contrast

  • William Henry Jackson for photography of  Colorado (specifically Mt. of the Holy Cross) and Yellowstone

  • Art Wolfe for his landscape and wildlife work

  • Galen Rowell for his mountaineering and photography work

  • John Fielder for his Colorado landscape photography

  • Tim Fitzharris for his photography of the National Parks

The painters include:

  • Albert Bierstadt for his paintings of the Rocky Mountains and Yosemite

  • Thomas Cole for his paintings of wilderness landscapes

  • Thomas Hill for his paintings of California

  • Georgia O'Keeffe for her paintings focusing on flowers and color
